SINGAPORE — Ang Mo Kio town centre will be redesigned and upgraded, Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong announced on Sunday (Aug 28) as he revealed that plans for Singapore's transformation involves not just new towns but mature estates as well.

Mr Lee had first spoken about plans to reimagine and transform Singapore last Sunday during his National Day Rally.

"It applies not just to new towns, but also to mature estates like Teck Ghee," he said on Sunday at the Teck Ghee National Day Celebration Dinner — the first one held physically in two years since Covid-19 hit.

“We have further plans to upgrade and redesign our town centre to make it more enjoyable and more accessible to residents, with more greenery, more seats and more shelters — suitable for old people and also young people.”

The town centre upgrade is part of improvements to the Ang Mo Kio estate, where several blocks of flats are undergoing the Neighbourhood Renewal Programme.

The first phase of upgrades will be completed as early as the middle of next year, said Mr Lee who is a grassroots adviser for Teck Ghee.

“It will stretch from the square outside AMK Hub and 51@AMK, through our outdoor shopping street, all the way to the central stage,” he said.

An exhibition on future developments in the town has also been planned for next year.

"I hope you all will come down and take a look because there are many improvements in Teck Ghee and Ang Mo Kio which we can all look forward to," said Mr Lee.

Sunday's dinner was attended by more than 1,000 residents and guests, including other grassroots advisers for Ang Mo Kio. The night featured performances by Teck Ghee Community Club interest groups, community partners and schools.

Reflecting on how the country had battled through the pandemic, Mr Lee said that he was “very happy that in Teck Ghee and elsewhere in Singapore, residents have come together to support one another”.

He described how Teck Ghee residents encouraged one another to take the Covid-19 vaccinations, with many stepping forward to volunteer when Teck Ghee Community Centre was converted into a vaccination centre.

"As we celebrate National Day this month, let us continue to stay united, let us support one another, let us strive to build an even better, more caring and inclusive home for all of us in Singapore," said Mr Lee.
