SINGAPORE – The Asian Civilisations Museum (ACM) has been named the top museum in Singapore and ranked ninth in Asia by TripAdvisor’s Travellers’ Choice awards for Museums released today (Sept 16).

The ACM is the only Singapore museum ranked among Asia’s top 10 museums, coming up just behind Hong Kong’s Museum of History (ranked 8th). The Changi Chapel and Museum was the only other Singapore museum appearing among the top 25 museums in Asia, taking 13th place.

TripAdvisor describes the ACM as “the first museum in the region to present a broad yet integrated perspective of pan-Asian cultures and civilisations”.

The Travellers’ Choice awards honour top travel spots worldwide based on millions of reviews and opinions from TripAdvisor travellers. Award winners were determined using an algorithm that took into account the quantity and quality of reviews for museums worldwide, gathered over a 12-month period.

In the Singapore top 10 chart, the ACM took the top spot ahead of other museums, such as the National Museum of Singapore and ArtScience Museum at Marina Bay Sands, which came in fourth and fifth, respectively.

Dr Alan Chong, director of the Asian Civilisations Museum, said: “We are delighted to be recognised as one of Singapore’s top museums by TripAdvisor travellers, and thank them for their support. The Asian Civilisations Museum reflects the diverse heritage of Singapore’s people and provides an opportunity for visitors to explore the interconnections between Asian cultures.”

The number one museum ranking in Asia went to China’s famed Museum of Qin Terra-cotta Warriors and Horses, while Cambodia’s Tuol Sleng Genocide Museum and Japan’s Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum were second and third, respectively.

Globally, the Art Institute of Chicago led the top 10, followed by the National Museum of Anthropology of Mexico and Russia’s State Hermitage Museum and Winter Palace, according to the travel site.
