SINGAPORE — The bodies of the two Singaporeans who were killed in a Porsche 911 Turbo that crashed on a Kuala Lumpur highway have been brought home, following the completion of the post-mortem examination at Kuala Lumpur General Hospital (KLGH).
A KLGH press officer confirmed yesterday that the bodies of drag racer Kwek Kon Chun, 35, and professional photographer Franco Toh, 43, were on their way home at press time.
Last night, friends and family trickled in to comfort Mr Kwek’s bereaved family at 11 Tanglin Hill, where the wake is being held. The lane leading to the house was cordoned off and manned by security officers. While the press was not allowed entry, some vehicles bearing numerous wreaths were permitted to pass.
Most of the visitors declined to comment when approached by reporters. A man with tears welling in his eyes identified himself as a close family friend before rushing into the home.
Aetos auxiliary police officers later arrived, adding to the already tight security in the area.
Mr Kwek and Mr Toh were driving along the Kuala Lumpur-Seremban Expressway at about 2.30am on Sunday when tragedy struck. It is believed Mr Kwek lost control of the car before it crashed into a road divider on the highway. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene at 3.30am.
Mr Kwek, who was also the co-founder of the Neverland Group of nightclubs, had taken part in drag-racing championships in Malaysia, including the Supercar Drag Race at the Sepang International Circuit.
Mr Kwek’s funeral mass will be held at the Church of St Ignatius at 3pm on Thursday. The cortege will leave for Mandai Crematorium Hall 1after the mass.
A statement issued by Mr Kwek’s family said: “The family is still in shock over the untimely death of Kon Chun and has requested to be allowed to grieve in private.” It also expressed condolences to Mr Toh’s family.
Mr Kwek was the son of Mr Kwek Leng Keow, the managing director of Hong Realty, a private property company under Hong Leong Group Singapore, and the nephew of Hong Leong Group director Kwek Leng Peck.
