SINGAPORE — Transport operator SMRT has made a police report in the wake of a viral video which appears to show someone jamming open a platform screen door at an MRT station, preventing it from closing.

Responding to TODAY's queries, president of SMRT Trains Lam Sheau Kai said on Thursday (March 2) that on Feb 28 at about 5pm, a commuter on the east-bound station platform at Jurong East MRT Station "deliberately prevented a platform screen door from closing".

"We take a serious view of such behaviour — not only is it dangerous for the person involved, but the irresponsible act could also cause delays to train service, affecting many commuters," said Mr Lam.

"For the safety of everyone, all commuters are advised not to obstruct the doors when the doors are closing," he said.

He added that SMRT has reported this matter to the police.

The video, which was uploaded onto social media site Reddit on Wednesday, is taken from the perspective of someone who sounds like a young boy.

The person appears to block the platform screen door from closing with what sounds like a metal object, causing a delay to the train moving off. The person then claims that the video will be uploaded to YouTube, before retracting the claim.

"I’m going to go far away so I’m not too much of a suspect," says the voice behind the camera, backing off from the train door.

After about a minute's delay, an SMRT staff runs over to the affected platform door, appearing to fix the issue caused. It is only after this that the train moves off.

The post on Reddit has received over 500 upvotes and over 200 comments, most of whom were critical of the person's actions.

The Rapid Transit Systems Regulations states that no person should interfere with the platform screen doors or train doors, or the operation of these doors, unless in an emergency, or if he is an authorised person. The maximum penalty for interference with these doors or their operation is S$1,000.
