SINGAPORE — It was a typical Sunday at Ngee Ann City, a bustling high-end mall on Orchard Road that houses the stores of branded goods such as Chanel and Louis Vuitton.
There was nothing out of the ordinary until about 2pm, when store assistants and shoppers across the six floors starting from the second basement level heard a loud thud. Some rushed out of the stores to see what happened, only to be greeted by the sight of a man’s body sprawled on the floor as blood oozed out from his head.
The man had apparently fallen from the third floor.
On Sunday (July 14), the police said that they found a 35-year-old man lying motionless on the ground when they arrived at the scene, having been alerted to the incident at 2.07pm.
The man, who was unconscious when he was taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital where doctors were placed on standby to receive him, died from his injuries en route, TODAY understands.
Part-time waiter Jerdy Ang, who works at the cafe Patties and Wiches on the third floor, saw the man lying on his side outside Action City, a store that sells collectible toys and action figurines.
“Initially, there was no blood. But then blood started oozing out of his head area,” said the 21-year-old polytechnic student, adding that the man wore a dark-coloured polo T-shirt and black pants.
Employees at the spectacle shop 999.9 Four Nines said they only found out that a man had fallen when they saw people gathered near the railing outside their store.
Those working on level three also said that the man appeared to be alone.
On basement two, employees working at stores and eateries said they saw two women attending to the man. Minutes later, the police arrived and cordoned the area.
An employee of Action City, who declined to be named, said she was in the storeroom inside the shop when she heard a loud thud and “vibration on the floor”. The storeroom was just steps away from where the body was.
As she looked at the body, she noticed that the man wore a wedding ring.
“By the time I went out, there was already a lot of blood on the floor,” she said. “It’s such an unfortunate incident.”
