SINGAPORE — The Committee of Inquiry (COI) looking into the Little India riot will be set up by the end of the week, said Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean today (Dec 10).

SINGAPORE — The Committee of Inquiry (COI) looking into the Little India riot will be set up by the end of the week, said Deputy Prime Minister Teo Chee Hean today (Dec 10).

The COI will take an in-depth look into the incident, said DPM Teo, and it will also review current procedures for places where foreign workers congregate to see if there are improvements that are needed.

Mr Teo also said that police have made further arrests as investigations into Sunday’s incident continue. The traffic accident which allegedly sparked off the incident will also be investigated in detail to make sure it is dealt with fairly, he added.

Earlier today Mr Teo and Senior Minister of State Masagos Zulkifli visited the Special Operations Command officers who had restored order on Sunday night to thank them for their efforts.

“They exercised restraint in the operation and responded in a careful and calibrated way,” said Mr Teo.

“This allowed the whole situation to be brought under control promptly and without major injuries to the rioters, to the troopers or bystanders.”

He added that Singapore must continue to have a capability to respond to contingencies even while working on building a safe, secure and socially harmonious environment.
