SINGAPORE — A person who tested positive for Covid-19 visited the Al-Ansar Mosque in Bedok North multiple times between June 26 and July 2, said the Islamic Religious Council of Singapore (Muis) on Thursday (July 9).

In a media release, Muis said it was notified by the Ministry of Health (MOH) on July 7 that the individual had visited the mosque for evening prayers eight times between June 26 and July 2. The person could be traced due to the safeguards put in place by mosques, Muis added.

As a precautionary measure, the mosque was closed from July 7 evening until July 8 for cleaning and disinfection. Prayer services resumed on July 9 and Friday prayers will be carried out as planned on July 10.

According to Muis, the contact made between worshippers in the mosque is "transient" as the time they can spend inside the premises is restricted. MOH also confirmed that other worshippers are at low risk of being infected by Covid-19.

"Nevertheless, Muis advises members of the public who have been to Masjid Al-Ansar at these specified times to monitor their health closely for 14 days from their date of visit," the council said, adding that they should seek treatment if they do not feel well.

Muis also advised vulnerable groups such as the elderly, children and those with chronic respiratory conditions not to come to the mosque, and to perform their prayers at home instead.

Those who do visit mosques should remain vigilant and follow all safe management procedures, while those who feel unwell should stay at home.

"With everyone’s cooperation, we can keep Covid-19 at bay and progressively resume more activities at the mosques in time to come," Muis added.
