SINGAPORE — A construction firm in Singapore has been taken to task by the authorities for housing foreign workers in unhygienic accommodations.

Kay Lim Construction & Trading was found to have housed 60 foreign workers — including workers from nine other firms — in temporary quarters that were unhygienic and infested with rats, the Ministry of Manpower (MOM) said on Wednesday (March 15).

The quarters were within a construction site located along Ghim Moh Link.

The company faces a total of 80 charges for the offences, including 20 for failing to update the ministry on the housing addresses of foreign workers staying at a different construction site.

The case, first brought to court on Tuesday, has been adjourned to April 18.

The website of Kay Lim Construction & Trading states that the firm has built more than 7,000 units of Housing and Development Board (HDB) flats.

It has also undertaken more than S$1.7 billion worth of contracts in the public and private sectors, including schools, condominiums, factories and lift-upgrading works.

Some of the company’s past projects include Treelodge@Punggol under HDB and ITE College West (Bukit Batok).

The MOM said that the firm has since complied with its order to improve the hygiene and living conditions of all its temporary quarters.
