Covid-19: Five new cases in Singapore; new cluster emerges at Safra Jurong private function

SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) on Thursday (March 5) has confirmed five more cases of Covid-19 in Singapore. Of these newly confirmed cases, one is an imported case who was on a Turkish Airlines flight, and the others are part of a new cluster involving a private dinner function at Safra Jurong on Feb 15.

SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) on Thursday (March 5) has confirmed five more cases of Covid-19 in Singapore. Of these newly confirmed cases, one is an imported case who was on a Turkish Airlines flight, and the others are part of a new cluster involving a private dinner function at Safra Jurong on Feb 15.

This brings the total number of confirmed infections in the country to 117.

In its media statement, MOH said that two more patients have been discharged: A 25-year-old Singaporean man (Case 71) who is a contact of someone linked to the Grace Assembly of God church cluster and a 24-year-old Singapore permanent resident (Case 98) linked to someone from the Wizlearn Learning cluster.

In all, 81 people have fully recovered from the Covid-19 infection and have been discharged.

Of the 36 confirmed cases who are still in hospital, most are stable or improving. Seven are in critical condition in the intensive care unit.

THE LATEST CASES

Case 113

  • Case 113 is an imported case involving a 42-year-old French man who is a Singapore work pass holder. He has no recent travel history to affected countries and regions but had been in France, Portugal and the United Kingdom between Feb 8 and March 3.

  • He is warded in an isolation room at the National Centre for Infectious Diseases (NCID).

  • He reported an onset of symptoms on March 3 during his flight on Turkish Airlines from Istanbul to Singapore. He was diagnosed with Covid-19 infection on March 4 in the afternoon.

  • Before he was warded, he had visited Gleneagles Hospital for an unrelated matter. He lives in the Mount Sophia area.

Case 114

  • Case 114 is a 62-year-old Singaporean man who has no recent travel history to affected countries and regions.

  • He is warded in an isolation room at the National University Hospital (NUH).

  • He is a family member of Case 115 and is linked to the cluster involving a private dinner function at Safra Jurong.

  • He reported an onset of symptoms on Feb 28 and had sought treatment at a general practitioner (GP) clinic on Feb 29.

  • He went to the emergency department at NUH on March 3 and test results confirmed an infection on March 4 in the afternoon.

  • Before he was admitted into hospital, he had mostly stayed at home in the Westwood Avenue area in Jurong West.

Case 115

  • Case 115 is a 62-year-old Singaporean woman who has no recent travel history to affected countries and regions.

  • She was confirmed to have Covid-19 infection on March 5 in the morning and is warded in an isolation room at NUH.

  • She is a family member of Case 114 and is linked to the cluster involving a private dinner function at Safra Jurong.

Case 116

  • Case 116 is a 50-year-old Singaporean woman who has no recent travel history to affected countries and regions.

  • She was confirmed to have Covid-19 infection on March 5 in the morning and is warded in an isolation room at NCID. She is linked to the cluster involving a private dinner function at Safra Jurong.

Case 117

  • Case 117 is a 52-year-old Singaporean woman who has no recent travel history to affected countries and regions but had been in Malaysia on March 1.

  • She was confirmed to have Covid-19 infection on March 5 in the morning and is warded in an isolation room at NCID. She is linked to the cluster involving a private dinner function at Safra Jurong.

UPDATE ON PREVIOUSLY CONFIRMED CASE

In its media statement, MOH gave an update on Case 112, the preschool assistant cook who works at Creative O Preschoolers’ Bay at the International Business Park in Jurong East. The 62-year-old Singaporean woman is linked to the cluster involving the private dinner function at Safra Jurong.

She is now warded in an isolation room at NCID.

She had reported an onset of symptoms on Feb 21 and had sought treatment at Bukit Batok Polycinic on the same day and on Feb 25, as well as three GP clinics on Feb 21, 23 and 27 and March 1.

Identified as a contact of Case 94 —who is a family member of a Raffles Institution student (Case 96) — she was referred by MOH to NCID on March 3 and was isolated. Test results confirmed Covid-19 infection on March 4 in the morning.

LINKS BETWEEN PREVIOUS CASES

Further epidemiological investigations and contact tracing have uncovered links between previously announced and new cases. This was made possible with the assistance of the Singapore Police Force.

  • Six of the locally transmitted confirmed cases (Cases 31, 33, 38, 83, 90 and 91), as well as Cases 8 and 9, are linked to The Life Church and Missions Singapore. These six cases are linked to another 23 confirmed cases (Cases 48, 49, 51, 53, 54, 57, 58, 60, 61, 62, 63, 66, 67, 68, 70, 71, 73, 74, 78, 80, 81, 84, 88) who are linked to the Grace Assembly of God.

  • Nine of the confirmed cases (Cases 19, 20, 21, 24, 25, 27, 28, 34 and 40) are linked to Yong Thai Hang, a health products shop off Lavender Street.

  • Three of the confirmed cases (Cases 30, 36 and 39) are linked to the business meeting held at Grand Hyatt Singapore from Jan 20 to Jan 22.

  • Five of the confirmed cases (Cases 42, 47, 52, 56 and 69) are linked to the Seletar Aerospace Heights construction site.

  • Fourteen of the confirmed cases (Cases 93, 95, 97, 98, 99, 100, 101, 102, 103, 104, 105, 106, 108 and 110) are linked to Wizlearn Technologies.

  • Eight of the confirmed cases (Cases 94, 96, 107, 112, 114, 115, 116 and 117) are linked to a private dinner function at Safra Jurong on Feb 15.

MOH said that investigations on these clusters are ongoing.

It added that contact tracing is underway for 12 locally transmitted cases to establish any links to previous cases or travel history to affected countries or regions.
