SINGAPORE — A woman has been accused of threatening her mother — who once unsuccessfully sued the Novena Church over an alleged failed exorcism — with a knife.
Subashini Jeyabal (picture), 28, was charged in July with criminal intimidation for placing the knife to her mother’s neck.
She allegedly threatened Madam Amutha Valli Krishnan, 57, at their Ang Mo Kio flat in late June.
Court documents stated that the accused had apparently said she would kill Mdm Amutha Valli and cut her.
Subashini also faces two other charges of causing hurt. She allegedly kicked her mother and slapped her father, Mr Suppiah Jeyabal, that same day in June.
Her lawyer, Mr Louis Joseph, during a brief mention yesterday, made representations to the court, saying the alleged incident did not happen, as Mdm Amutha Valli is delusional. The case will be mentioned again on Oct 16.
In her court case, Mdm Amutha Valli had claimed that the failed exorcism occurred in 2004 at the Novena Church, and sought damages from the church, as well as its priests and volunteers. The incident, she alleged in her suit, had caused her psychological trauma.
After a trial spanning two years, the High Court dismissed her case in 2009, saying the versions of the incident offered by both the defendants and Mdm Amutha Valli were bizarre. CLAIRE HUANG
