SINGAPORE — Many Star Wars fans would have wasted no time in catching The Last Jedi, the latest instalment of the franchise that opened in cinemas on Thursday (Dec 14).

Car workshop and credit management firm boss Mr Alex Low did that – and more.

He booked a 170-seater theatre at Golden Village Suntec City for friends, family and fellow Ferrari Owners’ Club Singapore members, and succeeded in getting some of his guests to dress up as Star Wars characters at the private screening on Thursday night.

It was Mr Low’s third time watching The Last Jedi. He had snagged a coveted ticket to its Singapore premiere on Tuesday and caught it again the next day with his two older children, aged 14 and 17, at I12 Katong.

At the event, Mr Low dressed up as Kylo Ren, Luke Skywalker’s fallen apprentice, while his wife, Madam Angela Ngoh, 34, was Rey, the film’s female protagonist.

Mr Low, 49, picked his costume from an impressive Kylo Ren collection — amassed over two years — of four wigs, two capes, four sets of sleeves, seven tunics, three coats, five belts, ten buckles, two pairs of pants and five sabres.

He identifies with the character and said they share “the same temperament” — individuals dealing with their “anger”.

“We are bad guys (trying to) do a good job,” said Mr Low.

The flamboyant businessman did not bat an eyelid at the S$2,800 he had to fork out for the private screening, which included drinks and popcorn for guests.

“I just want more people to love Star Wars,” said Mr Low, whose passion for the George Lucas creation began when he caught the first movie at the now-defunct Odeon Cinema in the 1980s.

This was not the first private screening he has organised. Two years ago when The Force Awakens was released, he had hosted about 30 close friends at a GV Gold Class theatre.

This time round, he was looking to book a 300-seater theatre a month in advance so he could include some guests who were underprivileged, but found the bigger theatres already occupied.

His guests who dressed up included Mr Joshua Ko, 32, the general manager of an events management company. Clad in white armour as a First Order snowtrooper, Mr Ko had excited teenagers and children clamouring for wefies.

Frenchman Herve Cotton, 43, was dressed up as Luke Skywalker. The sales manager had flown back to Singapore on Wednesday night from Hollywood, where he caught the Dec 9 world premiere. “I never laughed and cried so much in a Star Wars movie,” he said.

Mr Low was equally effusive in his praise for director Rian Johnson. “It’s just waves and waves of surprises and a lot of fun,” he said.

He has already made plans for Episode 9’s release, slated for 2019. “I would book three to six months in advance to get a big theatre,” Mr Low declared.
