SINGAPORE — Singapore's Feng Tianwei pulled off a stirring comeback to stun compatriot Zeng Jian and take home the gold medal on Sunday (Aug 7) in the table tennis women's singles event at the 2022 Commonwealth Games.

World number 16 Feng bounced back from three sets down to beat Zeng 4-3 in the all-Singapore final.

Zeng started the match stronger, taking the first set 11-6. She then raced to a lead in the second set before claiming it 11-5.

In the third set, Feng put up a valiant fight, but world number 60 Zeng proved too strong and won it 11-8.

With her back against the wall, Feng started the fourth set strongly and claimed it 11-4, before taking the fifth set 11-6 and the sixth set 11-8.

In a tense deciding set, the pair were closely matched before Feng prevailed 11-5.

As the Singapore national anthem played in the National Exhibition Centre in Birmingham, Feng could not hold back her tears. She waved at fans before making a heart shape with her arms.

Singapore was assured of both the gold and silver medals at the event after both Feng and Zeng won their respective semi-final matches on Saturday.

Feng beat India's Sreeja Akula 4-3 (11-6, 8-11, 6-11, 11-9, 11-8, 8-11, 12-10) and Zeng defeated Australia's Liu Yangzi 4-2 (7-11, 9-11, 12-10, 11-4, 11-6, 11-9).

This is Singapore's second gold medal and fourth silver medal at the Games. The country also has a bronze medal. CNA
