SINGAPORE - Archbishop Emeritus Nicholas Chia has woken up and uttered his first words since falling into a coma on Feb 18. The former head of the Singapore Catholic Church is “fairly conscious” and said hello to his doctors earlier this week.
The Archbishop’s Office said in an update on March 13 that the large clot in Archbishop Emeritus Chia’s brain has since been resolved, and the swelling in his head is subsiding.
However, the right side of his body remains weak and he will need physiotherapy.
The 76-year-old remains in critical care at Mount Alvernia Hospital.
The current head of the Singapore Catholic Church, Archbishop William Goh, has convened a team of medical doctors. Among other things, these doctors will recommend Archbishop Emeritus Chia’s future care in terms of rehabilitation.
The Archbishop’s Office will not be providing further updates, unless there are significant developments or changes to Archbishop Emeritus Chia’s condition. Archbishop Emeritus Chia retired last year. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
