SINGAPORE – A record number of Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) students who sat for the N-Level examination this year are eligible to move on to Secondary 5. The overall pass rate went up slightly compared to last year.

The Education Ministry’s (MOE) released the results of this year’s N-Level cohort on Monday (Dec 19).

Among the 12,305 Normal (Academic) students who received their results, 75.2 per cent are eligible to proceed to Secondary 5 where they will sit for their O-Level exam next year.

These are students who scored an aggregate of not more than 19 points in English Language, Mathematics and their best three subjects – known as the ELMAB3 aggregate – and a Grade 5 or better for both English and Mathematics.

They may choose to take up further studies in a polytechnic under the Education Ministry’s Direct-Entry Scheme, which prepares them to enter into selected diploma courses via a two-year programme at the Institute of Technical Education (ITE).

Comparing results from previous years, the number of Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) students eligible for promotion to Secondary 5 has gone up – from 72.6 per cent in 2011 to 74.9 per cent last year.

Meanwhile, the general performance of the Secondary 4 Normal (Academic) students in this year’s exam is similar to last year’s cohort, with 99.6 per cent passing rate.

However, the number of Normal (Academic) students who sat for O-Level subjects have gone down over the past two years, from 34.5 per cent in 2014 to 32.3 per cent this year.

And out of the 5,470 Normal (Technical) students who sat for the exams, 97.1 per cent passed, up from 96.6 per cent of students in 2015 and 97.5 in 2014.

Crest Secondary School – a specialised school for Normal (Technical) students – also saw its first graduating cohort this year, with 98 per cent of them passing at least one subject.

Students in the school specialise in one of four ITE Skills Certificate (ISC) including retail and mechanical services in upper secondary level. They also take subjects such as English, Math and Mother Tongue at the Normal (Technical) level.

According to the Ministry of Education (MOE), students who had earlier accepted conditional offers through ITE’s Special College Admissions Scheme (SCAS) have gained admission to Nitec courses of their choice.
