SINGAPORE — A Malaysian man was yesterday charged for the armed robbery that took place on Sunday in Geylang Bahru. Lee Heong Chye, 35, is accused of wielding a penknife and robbing Ms Chung Yi Ren, 33, at a multi-storey car park at Block 60A Geylang Bahru on the afternoon of Dec 1.

At the time of the alleged offence, Ms Chung was alone and was about to drive off from an open-air car park near Block 60A when Lee confronted her and forced her to move to the front passenger seat.

He then drove the car to the upper deck of Block 60A and demanded that Ms Chung hand over valuables worth more than S$2,200. These included a smartphone, a wrist watch, ATM cards, a credit card, and about S$200 and US$200 (S$251) in cash. Lee allegedly obtained Ms Chung’s ATM PIN numbers during the robbery.

He then tied her up using adhesive tape and fled the scene on foot. Ms Chung later managed to free herself and drove out of the multi-storey carpark to seek help.

Lee was arrested by a team of officers on Wednesday along Scotts Road at about 3.25pm. If convicted, he may be jailed between two and 10 years, and given a minimum of 12 strokes of the cane. CLAIRE HUANG
