The Mandatory Give Way to Buses Scheme will extend to 51 more bus stops by the end of the year, bringing the total to 300 nationwide, said the Land Transport Authority (LTA) yesterday.

It noted that there were 1,883 violations last year, an improvement of more than 40 per cent from in 2009 (3,325 cases).

Triangular give-way markings are painted on roads approaching bus stops under the scheme, indicating that approaching motorists should slow down and watch in case buses are pulling out of the bus bay.

Before the give-way line, motorists should stop completely and give way to buses that are exiting the bus bay.

Those who do not give way to exiting buses or stop in the yellow box marked “Give Way to Buses” are committing a traffic offence.
