SINGAPORE — After nearly 20 years as a Member of Parliament (MP), Mr Inderjit Singh today (July 24) announced he will be stepping down and will not be contesting in the next General Election.
Mr Singh, who is MP for Ang Mo Kio GRC, posted the news on Facebook hours after the release of the new electoral boundaries map, in which his Kebun Baru ward was redrawn into Nee Soon GRC.
“I would like to take the opportunity to share that I will be stepping down at the coming GE,” he wrote, thanking the residents of the Kebun Baru ward and Ang Mo Kio GRC for their support during his time as an MP.
Mr Singh was first elected into parliament at the 1996 General Election.
“I thank the residents of Kebun Baru and Ang Mo Kio for the support they gave me during this time and for the confidence and trust they placed in me. I did my best to serve and this would not have been possible without my team, the grassroots leaders and branch activists, at Kebun Baru who have become my extended family.
“I urge the residents at Kebun Baru to continue to support this team, which will be helmed by my successor. To Kebun Baru, Ang Mo Kio and everyone there, you will always be in my heart.”
Mr Singh had served as Deputy Government Whip from 2002 to 2011. He became an active grassroots leader in 1984.
