SINGAPORE — Imagine browsing for books while surrounded by lush Japanese architecture, complemented further by traditional Japanese interior design: That’s what regular customers of the Kinokuniya main store at Ngee Ann City can expect when the book store re-launches this Saturday (Nov 1).

15 years after the Japanese book chain first opened in Singapore, the popular book store has undergone a makeover to “refresh” and “restore” the outlet, said the company.

The new store design, labelled as the “Neo-Chapter”, draws inspiration from traditional Japanese tea rooms, machiya-style book houses and other Japanese design forms. For instance, the new ceiling and floor design is said to be influenced by the arrangement of Japanese tatami mats — timber panels on the ceiling will run in parallel to wood and granite floor patterns.

The store will debut its new design to the public on Nov 1, 10am. To celebrate, there will be discounts given to all customers, as well as Japanese art performances conducted at the store.

Kinokuniya says it hopes to rebuild memories of the bookstore that many customers have become fondly attached to and recreate familiarity of good customer experiences. The company has kept the exact configuration of its original store, only with changes to the furniture and design elements.
