Lorry driver arrested in Jalan Eunos road rage case, cyclist assisting with investigations

SINGAPORE — The police are investigating a road rage incident along Jalan Eunos on Sunday (Feb 24) that involved a lorry driver and a cyclist.

The lorry driver, 32, was arrested on Tuesday for a rash act endangering the personal safety of others, said the police in a statement on Tuesday evening. The cyclist, 55, is assisting with investigations for voluntarily causing hurt.

The video of their altercation has been widely shared online.

According to the police’s preliminary investigations, the dispute arose after the lorry driver overtook the cyclist on the road. The lorry driver allegedly followed the cyclist after he rode away, then veered into the cyclist’s lane and forced him off the road, said the police, who were alerted to the case at about 10.30am on Sunday.

The driver then alighted from the lorry to confront the cyclist, who allegedly punched the driver in the face.

The video shows the cyclist throwing a punch, with the driver falling to the ground. The cyclist is then seen getting back on his bicycle and leaving.

If convicted of a rash act endangering the personal safety of others, the driver may be jailed for up to six months and fined up to S$2,500.

If convicted of voluntarily causing hurt, the cyclist may be jailed for up to two years and fined up to S$5,000.

Sunday’s incident comes after another similar video went viral in December, where a cyclist was sideswiped by a lorry after he hit its side view mirror. 

In that incident, the driver also swerved into the cyclist, knocking him off his bicycle and onto the grass patch next to the road.

The police said rash driving or riding can result in serious or fatal traffic accidents.

“All motorists are urged to drive safely and strictly abide to traffic rules and regulations. The police will not hesitate to take firm action against motorists who choose to endanger the safety of other road users,” the police said.
