SINGAPORE — The blackout that affected thousands of people at the Central Business District (CBD) and Chinatown last week was caused by SP Group crew members doing maintenance work at a substation that day.

In a statement on Monday (June 4), energy provider SP Group explained: “A test equipment component was not removed before the system was re-energised, resulting in supply disruption.”

It added that it takes full responsibility for the disruption and is tightening its procedures to prevent a recurrence of the incident.

“We know that our priority must be to ensure a safe and reliable power supply to Singapore at all times,” said SP Group.

On Friday, over 3,000 SP Group customers in the CBD and Chinatown were affected by a blackout in the afternoon, as buildings went dark and traffic lights were out of service.

Electricity supply was progressively restored through remote switching and the supply was fully restored within 34 minutes, SP Group said in a previous statement.

Affected buildings were said to include the Arcade, Capital Tower and Chinatown Point.
