SINGAPORE — The man at the centre of the spitting incident that was caught on video and went viral is expected to plead guilty next week.
Juraimi Kamaludin, 47, had previously applied for legal aid, but his application was rejected as he did not qualify. With no lawyer to represent him, Juraimi has indicated he will plead guilty to the charges when the case is mentioned again in a week’s time.
The odd-job worker was charged in October with being a public nuisance with his aggressive behaviour at Woodlands Bus Interchange on Oct 22 at 9.30pm.
He allegedly spat in the faces of two women, 41-year-old Teoh Lay Peng and 34-year-old Lee Kuan Eng. Not only was he said to have spat in Ms Lee’s face twice, the bespectacled man allegedly pushed Ms Teoh out of a bus, for which he could be jailed a maximum of six months and fined up to S$2,500.
Juraimi also faces another charge of disorderly behaviour in September this year, at about 8am, at a void deck at Bukit Batok Street 21. In total, he faces six charges.
If convicted of disorderly behaviour, Juraimi could be jailed up to a month and fined S$1,000. For using criminal force by spitting, he is looking at a maximum of three months’ jail and a S$1,500 fine for each count.
The maximum penalty for being a public nuisance by behaving aggressively is a fine of up to S$1,000.
