SINGAPORE — The Monetary Authority of Singapore has announced that it will be rolling out a new series of coins by the middle of the year.

The denominations that will get a facelift are the five, ten, twenty and fifty cent coins as well as the dollar coin.

Old coins will not be demonetised, and people can continue to use them. MAS said it chose to renew the coins as its previous series has been in use for about 28 years and were due for a change.

The new coins will feature iconic parts of Singapore — the Esplanade, HDB flats, Changi airport, Singapore’s port, and the Merlion respectively — and have been revamped to have larger number fonts for easier readability.

The coins will also have differing edges to assist the visually challenged. The fifty cent coin, for instance, has a micro scalloped edging, which is slightly larger than the milled edge of the almost-similarly sized twenty cent coin.

For more information, MAS has site up a micro-site at http://www.mas.gov.sg/newcoins
