SINGAPORE — A 31-year-old motorcyclist has died after a road accident on Friday (July 23) night along the Central Expressway (CTE). He was among seven people taken to Tan Tock Seng Hospital.
The police told TODAY that two cars, a taxi, a lorry and two motorcycles were involved in the accident, which happened on the CTE towards the Seletar Expressway (SLE) after the Cavenagh Road exit.
Two male motorcyclists, one female car driver, one male lorry driver and his three other passengers were taken to hospital, the police added. One of the motorcyclists later died from his injuries when in hospital.
The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a Facebook post that it was alerted to the accident at about 9.20pm. Upon its arrival, all lanes on the expressway were heavily congested.
“A car was completely engulfed in flames, and a lorry and two motorcycles were found turned on their sides. No one was trapped,” it said.
Emergency Medical Services personnel from SCDF assessed seven people for injuries.
At the same time, SCDF paramedics administered cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) on a person who had no pulse and was not breathing.
SCDF added that CPR was also administered on that person while on the way to the hospital.
Police investigations are ongoing.
Earlier on Friday evening at around 9.25pm, the Land Transport Authority tweeted that an accident had occurred in the CTE tunnel towards the SLE before the Cairnhill Circle entrance. It added then that the CTE tunnel was closed before the Cairnhill Circle entrance.
About 10 minutes later, LTA said that the accident had caused congestion until the Merchant Road exit.
In videos that were posted on social media, a car is seen engulfed in flames on the left shoulder of the road while a lorry is lying on its side in the middle of the expressway.
A motorcycle is also seen overturned, with a man — believed to be the motorcyclist — lying on the ground as curious motorists look on. Another motorcycle is seen further down the road near the burning car.
Photos shared on social media following the accident showed an SCDF ambulance deployed to the scene, along with several police vehicles and tow trucks.
CLARIFICATION: An earlier version of this article stated that a male car driver was among those taken to hospital. The police have clarified that the car driver was female.
