SINGAPORE — The National Heart Centre Singapore (NHCS) was officially opened this morning (Sept 25) with the Prime Minister as guest-of-honour and Heath Minister Gan Kim Yong in attendance among 250 guests.

The 12-storey building sited at Singapore General Hospital is four times bigger than the old building and houses three operating theatres with capacity for up to six cardiac catheterisation laboratories.

Not only will this centre treat patients with heart diseases, it will also have facilities for the teaching and training of doctors, nurses and allied health providers.

One and a half floors have also been dedicated to research on cardiac care with the National Heart Research Institute Singapore.

Adjunct Professor Terrance Chua, medical director of the centre, added that NHCS has expanded its pool of healthcare professionals to about 1,200 — an increase of 40 per cent since 2010 — in preparation for the expansion of services.
