SINGAPORE — Singapore has confirmed 42 new cases of Covid-19, including 11 that are imported and one that is in the community. The remaining 30 are migrant workers staying in dormitories.
In a press release on Wednesday (Aug 12), the Ministry of Health (MOH) said that the 11 imported cases include two Singaporeans, three work pass holders, one work permit holder, four dependant’s pass holders and a special pass holder.
The two Singaporeans — an eight-year-old boy and a 37-year-old man — had returned from India on July 3 and from Indonesia on July 30 respectively.
Eight other imported cases had arrived from India and the Philippines between July 28 and July 31.
They had all been placed on a 14-day stay-home notice and tested positive while serving their notices at dedicated facilities.
The one special pass holder is a seaman who arrived from India on Aug 8 on a vessel.
“He reported symptoms and was swabbed while on the vessel. He had remained on the vessel until his test result came back positive for Covid-19, and was subsequently taken in an ambulance to a hospital,” MOH said.
The one case in the community is a 58-year-old Singaporean man who is linked to a previous infection, the ministry said.
Overall, the number of new cases in the community has remained stable at an average of two cases a day in the past two weeks.
The number of unlinked cases in the community has also remained stable at an average of one case a day in the past 14 days.
The health ministry reiterated that the inter-agency taskforce has completed the testing of all workers in the dormitories.
“There are currently about 22,800 workers who are still serving out their quarantine period,” MOH said.
The ministry said that the figure included some 800 migrant workers who were newly quarantined because “we discovered a case amongst them in a cleared dormitory”.
“These workers will be tested when their quarantine ends, and we expect the case counts to remain high in the coming days, before tapering down thereafter,” MOH said.
Separately, the ministry added that two more dormitories — 33 Senoko Way and 23 Sungei Kadut Street 2 — have been cleared of the disease and now house only recovered individuals and those who have recently tested negative for coronavirus. They are no longer classified as a cluster.
UPDATES ON THE REMAINING CASES
In all, the total number of infections in Singapore now stands at 55,395.
Of these, 50,520 people have fully recovered and have been discharged from hospitals or community care facilities, including the 392 on Wednesday.
There are still 92 patients in hospitals and most are in stable condition or improving. No one is in critical condition under intensive care.
Another 4,756 patients are isolated and cared for at community facilities. These are those who have mild symptoms or are clinically well but still test positive for Covid-19.
Twenty-seven people have died from complications due to Covid-19.
