SINGAPORE — Singapore has confirmed 100 new cases of Covid-19, including two that are imported and one in the community. The remaining 97 are migrant workers in dormitories.
In a press release on Tuesday (Aug 18), the Ministry of Health (MOH) said that the two imported cases include one permanent resident and one dependant’s pass holder.
They had arrived from India on Aug 6 and Aug 10 respectively, MOH said.
The two had been placed on a 14-day stay-home notice and tested positive while serving their notices at dedicated facilities.
There was one case in the community with no known links to past cases or infections.
MOH said that the 39-year-old Singaporean man works at a bus depot in a role that is “non-public facing” and that does not entail interaction with commuters and bus drivers.
“He was detected as part of our screening of all staff in the public bus industry who work at depots and interchanges,” it said.
“This is a precautionary measure after MOH detected some cases at Bukit Panjang integrated transport hub.”
MOH noted that in all, more than 14,800 staff members and close contacts connected to the cases had been tested between July 23 and Aug 15.
Of these, 10 people tested positive using the polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, including the three initial cases detected at the transport hub.
“Testing has since completed, and five results are pending,” MOH said.
To determine if the 10 confirmed cases are current or past infections, the ministry also conducted serological tests for them.
Seven results have come back positive — including the community case on Tuesday — which indicate likely past infection, MOH noted.
Overall, the number of new cases in the community has remained stable at an average of two cases a day in the past two weeks.
The number of cases in the community with no known sources of infection has also remained stable at an average of one case a day in the past 14 days, MOH added.
UPDATES ON THE REMAINING CASES
The total number of infections in Singapore now stands at 55,938.
Of these, 52,533 people have fully recovered and have been discharged from hospitals or community care facilities, including 183 on Tuesday.
There are still 88 patients in hospitals and most are in stable condition or improving. No one is under intensive care.
Another 3,290 patients are isolated and being cared for at community facilities. They have mild symptoms or are clinically well but still tested positive for Covid-19.
Twenty-seven people have died from complications due to Covid-19.
