SINGAPORE — Singapore has confirmed 347 new cases of Covid-19, including seven in the community, two that were imported and 338 linked to migrant workers living in dormitories.

The Ministry of Health said on Tuesday (July 14) that the two imported cases are both Singaporeans who had returned from India on July 9. They tested positive for the coronavirus while serving their 14-day stay-home notice.

For the seven in the community, one is a Singaporean, three are work pass holders and three are work permit holders.

Four of these seven cases were picked up due to the ministry’s proactive surveillance and screening while the other three had already been placed on quarantine earlier.

Four of the community cases also have no known links to past cases or clusters. “(These four) are all in the construction sector, and had been swabbed as part of our periodic screening of workers in essential services who are living outside the dormitories. Three of them are asymptomatic,” MOH said.

Investigations are ongoing for the cases with no known source of infection.

“In the meantime, all the identified close contacts of the cases have been isolated and placed on quarantine, and will be tested at the start and end of their quarantine period so that we can detect asymptomatic cases,” MOH said.

“We will also conduct serological tests for their household contacts to determine if these cases could have been infected by them.”

A serological test is used to check if a person had an infection in the past, or on someone who is asymptomatic or has a very low viral load.

Overall, the number of new cases in the community has gone down slightly from an average of 14 a day in the week before to an average of 13 a day in the past week.

The number of unlinked cases in the community has gone up from an average of six a day in the week before to an average of seven day in the past week.

“We will continue to closely monitor these numbers, as well as the cases detected through our surveillance programme,” MOH said.

WORKERS IN DORMITORIES

The ministry said that it has tested and cleared more than 215,000 workers to date. They make up about two-thirds of those staying in dormitories.

“Work is ongoing to prepare these dormitories to be declared cleared (of the coronavirus), and for workers to resume work. We are on track to clear about 80 per cent of workers staying in the dormitories by end-July, and to complete the testing of dormitory residents around mid-August.”

In the next few days, MOH is expecting to see a larger population of migrant workers in various purpose-built dormitories completing their isolation period and being tested for Covid-19.

“As some of them came from dormitories with higher prevalence of Covid-19 infection, we can expect a higher number of confirmed cases in the next few days from this group of migrant workers,” it added.

At the same time, one new cluster of infections has been identified at a dormitory located at 96 Kaki Bukit Industrial Terrace.

PUBLIC PLACES VISITED BY COVID-19 CASES

On Tuesday evening, MOH added two more locations to a list of public places that had been visited by Covid-19 cases when they were infectious.

They are:

  • Dian Xiao Er restaurant at Jem mall in Jurong on June 30 between 11.55am and 12.40pm

  • FoodXchange@Admiralty building at 8A Admiralty Street on July 7 between 9.55am and 12.55pm

MOH said that it would have already notified individuals who had been identified as close contacts of the confirmed cases.

UPDATES ON THE REMAINING CASES

In all, the total number of infections here now stands at 46,629.

Of these, 42,737 people have fully recovered and have been discharged from hospitals or community care facilities, including the 196 on Tuesday.

There are still 161 patients in hospitals and most are in stable condition or improving.

Another 3,704 patients are isolated and cared for at community facilities. These are those who have mild symptoms or are clinically well but still test positive for Covid-19.

Twenty-seven people have died from complications due to Covid-19, including a 62-year-old man whose death was reported on Tuesday.
