SINGAPORE — Singapore on Saturday (July 31) reported eight new Covid-19 clusters, including one linked to a Selarang Park Complex prison facility.

In its nightly update on the coronavirus situation here, the Ministry of Health (MOH) also announced the closure of the cluster at Changi General Hospital in Simei, which had 20 cases linked to it. There were no new cases traced to that cluster in the past 28 days.

Five of the 117 new locally transmitted cases recorded on Saturday were linked to Institution S2 at Selarang Park Complex. The cluster has six cases.

The complex at Upper Changi Road North is managed by the Singapore Prison Service.

The other seven new clusters were identified only by individual case numbers.

There are now 71 active clusters here, each having between three and 1,027 cases.

The number of Covid-19 patients with a serious form of the illness requiring oxygen to help them breathe has climbed to 33. This is the highest in at least the past 28 days and is up from 26 such patients on Friday.

In addition, there are seven patients in critical condition under intensive care.

Among the 40 patients who need breathing support or intensive care, three are fully vaccinated. They have underlying medical conditions.

MOH said that 26 seniors above 60 years old, 24 of whom are not vaccinated or partially vaccinated, have fallen very sick.

Of the 33 patients who require oxygen support, 22 are above 60, five are between the ages of 40 and 60, and the remaining six are aged between 19 and 39, the ministry's data showed.

Four of the seven patients under intensive care are older than 60, while the rest are between 40 and 60.

“Over the last 28 days, 49 local cases required oxygen supplementation, were admitted to the intensive care unit, or died. Twenty-eight are unvaccinated, 18 are partially vaccinated and three are fully vaccinated,” the ministry said.

As of Saturday, there were 604 hospitalised Covid-19 patients.

Separately, MOH said that it was investigating cases of infection involving markets and food centres, which were likely seeded by fishmongers who visited Jurong Fishery Port, which remains Singapore’s largest active coronavirus cluster.

It will extend free Covid-19 self-test kits to those who visited selected markets and food centres in the past two weeks. A collection drive will run from Sunday to Monday at residents’ committee centres near 497 Jurong West Street 41 Market and Fajar Market.

LATEST COVID-19 CASES

Earlier on Saturday, MOH said that there were 117 new locally transmitted cases of Covid-19, including 42 that were not linked to earlier infections.

Another 26 cases were added to the cluster at Jurong Fishery Port, bringing the tally to 1,027.

The cluster that broke out at karaoke lounges and clubs now has 251 cases, with the addition of one case.

Apart from the locally transmitted cases, there were three imported cases. One case was detected upon arrival and the other two developed the disease during isolation.

In all, Singapore confirmed 120 new Covid-19 cases on Saturday.

On the whole, the number of new cases in the community has dropped to 868 in the past week, from 1,027 in the week before.

MOH said: “We are likely to continue to see a high number of cases in the coming days as we step up efforts to detect them to contain their spread in the community.”

The number of cases in the community with no known sources of infection has risen to 273 this past week, from 99 in the previous week.

Singapore has recorded 64,981 Covid-19 cases and 37 deaths since the start of the pandemic.

VACCINATIONS

As of Friday, more than 7.5 million doses of Covid-19 vaccines had been given to about 4.3 million people, MOH said.

Some 3.33 million people have completed the full vaccination regimen — that is, two doses of the vaccine, or one dose for Covid-19 patients who have recovered.

As of Friday, 59 per cent of the population have completed their full vaccination regimen and 77 per cent have received at least one dose.

In addition, 102,840 doses of China’s Sinovac vaccine have been administered to 73,793 individuals.
