NSF, primary school teacher among 11 unlinked Covid-19 community cases in Singapore; 28 new infections in total

SINGAPORE — A full-time national serviceman (NSF) and a primary school teacher were among 11 new Covid-19 community cases on Monday (May 17) that have not been traced to any previously reported infections.

  • There were 28 cases of Covid-19 cases reported on May 18
  • Of these, 21 were detected in the community, 11 of which were unlinked
  • New cases were added to clusters at Learning Point tuition centre and Changi Airport
  • There were seven imported cases and none in foreign worker dormitories


SINGAPORE — A full-time national serviceman (NSF) and a primary school teacher were among 11 new Covid-19 community cases on Monday (May 17) that have not been traced to any previously reported infections.

They were among 21 new Covid-19 cases in the community reported by the Ministry of Health in its daily Covid-19 update. 

Four more cases were added to the Changi Airport Terminal 3 cluster, bringing the total cases there to 78. Two more were added to the Learning Point tuition centre cluster, which has grown to 20 cases.

In addition, there were seven imported cases, bringing the total number of new cases on Monday to 28.

There were no new cases in the foreign worker dormitories, the ministry added.

The 11 community cases with no known sources of infection were:

  • A 20-year-old Singaporean NSF who is fully vaccinated. He developed a runny nose on May 12 but did not seek medical treatment until May 16 when he also developed a cough. His test result came back positive on May 17. In a separate statement on Monday evening, the Ministry of Defence said the serviceman last visited Sungei Gedong Camp on May 14

  • A 37-year-old Singaporean teacher at Frontier Primary School. She developed sore throat, body aches and fever on May 14, and saw a general practitioner (GP) on the same day. She has tested preliminarily positive for the B1617 variant, and is pending further confirmatory tests

  • A 26-year-old Singaporean student at the National Institute of Education (NIE), and a part-time private tutor. She last visited NIE on April 30

  • A 76-year-old Singaporean retiree

  • A 57-year-old Singaporean who works as an administrative personnel at Pacific Law Corporation

  • A 22-year-old female Singaporean who works at Invade Industry

  • A 28-year-old Singaporean who works as a retail assistant at Alan Photo located at Funan Mall

  • A 45-year-old Indonesian cleaner at EuHabitat employed by Clean Hub Facility

  • A 47-year-old Singaporean who works at the Inland Revenue Authority of Singapore

  • A 16-year-old permanent resident who is a student at Singapore Polytechnic. He has tested preliminarily positive for the B1617 variant, and is pending further confirmatory tests

  • A 32-year-old Singaporean IT engineer at AbbVie Operations Singapore

CHANGI AIRPORT TERMINAL 3 CLUSTER

Four more cases were linked to an 88-year-old male Singaporean who is employed by Ramky Cleantech Services as a cleaner at Changi Airport Terminal 3. He was confirmed to have Covid-19 on May 5.   

This brings the airport cluster to 78 cases, the largest community cluster in Singapore.

Three of the four cases were detected while in quarantine.

The four new cases were: 

  • A 37-year-old Indonesian foreign domestic worker who is a household contact of a private hire car driver for ride-hailing firm Gojek. Her infection was detected while in quarantine.

  • A 63-year-old fully-vaccinated Singaporean homemaker who is a family member of earlier detected cases. Her infection was detected while in quarantine.

  • An eight-year-old Singaporean student at Fuchun Primary School who is a family member of a software engineer at ST Engineer earlier confirmed to be infected. The boy’s infection was detected while in quarantine.

  • A 49-year-old Singaporean aviation security officer at Changi Airport Terminal 3. She has tested preliminarily positive for the B1617 variant, and is pending further confirmatory tests.

LEARNING POINT CLUSTER

Two more cases were linked to a 50-year-old Singaporean female tutor at Learning Point centre whose infection was confirmed on May 12. This brings the cluster to 20 cases.

The two new cases were: 

  • A seven-year-old Singaporean pupil at Maha Bodhi School. She also attends student care at Seedlings World Student Care@Frankel and was identified as a close contact of a St Stephen’s School pupil who had attended classes at Learning Point.

  • A 72-year-old Singaporean retiree and family member of a Kong Hwa School pupil who had attended classes at Learning Point. The retiree was confirmed to have Covid-19 when he was tested while in quarantine.

WOK HEY STALL CLUSTER

One new case was linked to a 22-year-old male Singaporean who works as a cook at the Wok Hey stall in White Sands mall whose infection was confirmed on May 13. This brings the cluster to four cases.

The new case was a 62-year-old fully-vaccinated Singaporean retiree who is a homemaker. He is a family member of the cook working at the stall, a homemaker and a customer service officer at Wareesan Management who had all tested positive for Covid-19 earlier.

MARINA BAY SANDS CASINO DEALER CLUSTER

One new case was linked to a 36-year-old Malaysian dealer at Marina Bay Sands Casino whose infection was confirmed on May 16. This brings the cluster to three cases.

The new case was a 34-year-old Malaysian man who is unemployed. He is a household contact of the casino dealer.

OTHER LINKED CASES

The two other linked cases were:

  • A 36-year-old Filippino foreign domestic worker who is a close contact of the personal chauffeur who was earlier confirmed to have Covid-19

  • A 57-year-old Singaporean engineer at 3M Innovation Singapore who is a family member of the IT engineer at AbbVie Operations Singapore, who was reported as an unlinked case on Monday.

IMPORTED CASES

The seven imported cases were:

  • Two Singaporeans who returned from India and Malaysia

  • Three dependant’s pass holders who arrived from the Philippines and Russia

  • A student's pass holder who arrived from France

  • A work permit holder who arrived from Malaysia

They were all placed on stay-home notice upon arrival here and were tested while serving the notice, MOH said.

UPDATE ON REMAINING CASES

The total number of infections in Singapore is now 61,613.

Of these, 61,123 people have fully recovered and been discharged, including 19 on Monday.

There are still 213 patients in hospitals. Of these, most are stable or improving, and three are in a critical condition.

Another 246 patients are isolated at community facilities. They have mild symptoms or are clinically well but still tested positive for Covid-19.

Thirty-one people have died from complications due to the disease
