SINGAPORE — Singapore has confirmed 75 new cases of Covid-19, including 14 that are imported and one that is in the community. The remaining 60 are migrant workers staying in dormitories.
All the people with infections were asymptomatic, the Ministry of Health (MOH) noted in a press release on Wednesday (Sept 9).
It added that of the 60 infected persons in the dormitories, 31 are from the Westlite Toh Guan dormitory — the vast majority of whom had been placed on quarantine earlier and were tested during quarantine to determine their status.
MOH said that the 14 new imported cases comprise two Singaporeans, seven permanent residents, one work pass holder, three work permit holders and one student’s pass holder.
They had arrived in Singapore from India, Ghana, Kazakhstan and the Philippines between Aug 24 and 29.
All of them had been placed on a 14-day stay-home notice and tested positive while serving their notices at dedicated facilities.
The one case in the community is a 33-year-old work permit holder who is linked to a past cluster.
The man was detected as a result of the ministry’s rostered routine testing of workers in the construction, marine and process sectors who are not staying at dormitories.
Overall, the number of new cases in the community has gone down from an average of three cases a day in the week before to an average of two a day in the past week.
The number of cases in the community with no known sources of infection has also gone down from an average of two cases a day in the week before to an average of one a day in the past week.
Of the 60 new cases involving migrant workers in dormitories, 29 had been identified earlier as contacts of previous cases.
The remaining 31 were detected through surveillance testing, such as the rostered routine testing and the testing of those with acute respiratory infection symptoms.
MOH reiterated that of the 31 cases from the Westlite Toh Guan dormitory, the vast majority had been placed on quarantine earlier and were tested during quarantine to determine their status.
The remaining cases were detected through surveillance testing, such as the ministry's fortnightly rostered routine testing.
"This allows us to pick up cases in the dormitory early, including asymptomatic ones, so that we are able to ring-fence them quickly to prevent further transmission," it said.
UPDATES ON REMAINING CASES
The total number of infections in Singapore now stands at 57,166.
Of these, 56,492 people have fully recovered and have been discharged from hospitals or community care facilities, including 31 on Wednesday.
There are still 34 patients in hospitals and most are in stable condition or improving. No one is in intensive care.
Another 613 patients are isolated and being cared for at community facilities. They have mild symptoms or are clinically well but still tested positive for Covid-19.
Twenty-seven people have died from complications due to Covid-19.
