SINGAPORE — Shoppers who have missed the old Funan mall can now look forward to the re-opening of the revamped complex by the second quarter of next year – about three months ahead of schedule.

The retail and office components of the building will open to the public first, followed by the serviced apartments called the lyf Funan Singapore and managed by The Ascott Limited, which has also been brought forward from 2020 to the fourth quarter of next year.

The former Funan DigitaLife Mall, which closed in July 2016, has been undergoing a S$560 million renovation to turn it into a “creative hub”.

In a press release on Friday (Sept 28), CapitaLand said that “Funan is racing ahead to open Singapore’s first online-and-offline shopping mall integrating online, offline, data and logistics aimed at… transforming the customer experience”.

Speaking at the topping out ceremony of the mall at Funan Showsuite on Friday, the president and group chief executive officer of CapitaLand Group Lee Chee Koon said that “brick-and-mortar businesses must go beyond passively selling products and services, to generating quality retail experiences and emotional connections that are ‘on-brand’ with consumers”.

Some of the features at the new mall include an interactive directory that uses facial recognition to provide customised recommendations, video analytics to study shopper traffic and crowd density and those living at the residences will be able to use an app for social networking and room booking.

Mr Lee added: “We have conceived Funan to embrace new opportunities, with a focus on gathering and building a young and vibrant community by integrating an experiential mall with dynamic co-working and co-living spaces… A digital layer of tech-enabled customer experience further enriches Funan’s offerings.”

The new Funan mall will also be the first commercial development to allow cycling through the building at the ground level.

Among the retailers that will be present in the mall are homegrown GamePro, which will host eSports tournaments in a dedicated eSports zone at the mall, and Edible Garden City, which will operate a rooftop urban farm and host workshops for the community.

These brands will join the previously announced anchor tenants Golden Village cineplex, Kopitiam foodcourt and Wild Rice theatre.
