SINGAPORE — A new medical centre under National University Hospital (NUH) was officially opened today (21 Apr), boasting “patient-centric” amenities to provide more convenience and coordinated care for its patients.

Speaking at the opening ceremony, Health Minister Gan Kim Yong highlighted the importance of integrating the care and design of healthcare amenities.

“Building infrastructure capacity is important, but we must also integrate the care and design of our healthcare facilities to better serve the needs of our older and less mobile patients,” he said.

The 19-storey medical centre provides multiple services in one building, co-locating its clinical support services with the Specialist Outpatient Clinics.

For example, previously, patients had to visit the Kent Ridge Wing for their breast cancer consultation and walk over to the main building for diagnostics tests before heading back to the wing to see the doctor. Now, consultation, treatment, counseling and imaging services can all be done in the new building’s Breast Care Centre.

The new medical centre, sited above Kent Ridge MRT station, is also now more accessible for patients, especially the elderly who come by public transport, noted NUH Chief Executive Officer Prof Joe Sim.

Previously, patients had to take a train to Buona Vista MRT station before taking a shuttle bus to the hospital.

The new medical centre - part of the planned healthcare capacity expansion under the Healthcare 2020 Masterplan - was completed last year and has seen more than 120,000 patients since then.
