SINGAPORE — Shoppers at Jem shopping centre were surprised when water gushed down from the upper floors of the building onto the indoor common areas below shortly after noon today (June 17).
Photographs of the scene shared on Twitter showed water pouring down the indoor areas of the mall onto the ground floor, which briefly flooded some of the mall’s common areas.
A statement from Jem said the atrium side sprinklers on Level 3 in the mall were triggered at 12.15pm, resulting in the ‘water ingress’ at the mall’s common areas on Level B1, 1 and 2 and at some shops in those areas.
The statement added that as of 4.00pm today the water has been cleared, and that Jem remains open for business.
Jem opened just over a year ago on June 15, 2013 - after a four-day delay because it could not secure a fire permit in time. Two fires broke out in the mall last August, and in the following month the mall had to be closed for almost two weeks after a burst water pipe brought down a 50m-long portion of false ceiling.
