SINGAPORE — A baby boy was found alive in the rubbish chute of Block 534 Bedok North Street 3 on Tuesday (Jan 7) morning, police said.
In response to TODAY's queries, the police said that they received a call at about 9.10am for assistance at the location.
"A baby boy was found at the said location," they said.
TODAY understands that the baby was wrapped in a plastic bag and discovered among other bags of trash when cleaners were clearing the rubbish chute in the morning.
"Paramedics attended to the baby at the scene. There were no visible injuries on the baby and his condition was stable," the police said in a statement.
The baby was later taken to KK Women's and Children's Hospital. Investigations are in progress.
In a Facebook post, Mr Pritam Singh, Member of Parliament (MP) for Aljunied Group Representation Constituency, said that he learnt about the incident on Tuesday morning via messages and pictures shared in the Aljunied-Hougang Town Council (AHTC) MPs' chat group. Bedok North is part of the constituency.
"A million thoughts crossed my head when I saw the pictures and you can imagine the thoughts expressed through words and emoticons by the other MPs — feelings I am sure many Singaporeans would share," he wrote.
"Had the worker not found the blessed child, he/she could have been crushed by the compactor where all rubbish is centrally disposed in the precinct. Thankful to the Singapore Police Force and staff at the AHTC Kaki Bukit office for their assistance over this incident today. And a prayer for everyone distressed by this painful news."
