SINGAPORE — Look closely if you walk past a police officer from next Monday (April 16) - he or she will be sporting a new uniform designed for greater comfort and ease of use with body vests.

The changes, while visually subtle, are aimed at improving the operational effectiveness of its frontline officers, the police said in a statement on Wednesday.

The fabric for the new uniform, for instance, will offer "improved breathability, comfort and lightness" for officers working outdoors in Singapore's humid climate.

The metallic buttons used in the current police uniform will also be replaced with concealed plastic buttons.

"(The plastic buttons) will significantly enhance the officers' comfort level and ease of wearing body vests over their uniforms, such as ballistic resistant and other operational vests," added the police, who collaborated with the Ministry of Home Affairs' science and technology outfit to design the new uniform.

Officers in the new uniform will have the word "POLICE" embroidered above their name tag.

"These enhancements are part of Singapore Police Force's ongoing efforts to improve the operational effectiveness of our officers and support them in their policing work," the police said.
