Politicians voice out on Little India riot

The Little India riot last night was a very grave incident. Several police officers were injured, and vehicles damaged or destroyed. The situation is now under control, and investigations are underway. Whatever events may have sparked the rioting, there is no excuse for such violent, destructive, and criminal behaviour. We will spare no effort to identify the culprits and deal with them with the full force of the law.
I urge all Singaporeans to stay calm. Do send the Police any information, photos or videos of the incident that you may have. I also wish the injured officers a full and speedy recovery.
DPM Teo Chee Hean
Police will investigate all aspects of the incident, including the traffic accident. Members of the public should stay calm and not speculate on the facts before investigations. Those involved will be dealt with fairly, firmly, strictly and in accordance to the law.

The safety of our residents was the top of our concern when the Little India riot happened right in our constituency. Fortunately, the Police have brought the situation under control. Tuck Yew also had visited the site last night and again this morning to Race Course Road and Tekka Market area. I urge residents and businesses in Little India to go on with their lives and businesses as normal, as the Police work hard to bring the perpetrators to justice.
While we do not condone such unlawful acts by some individuals, let us also remember that the foreign workers in Singapore are by and large law abiding people. They are here to earn a living and to support their families in their home countries. It is a delicate and on-going effort to take care of the concerns of the residents and manage the needs of the foreign workers.
My fellow MPs and I will continue to strive to make Moulmein-Kallang Community a safe and pleasant home for all our residents. My heartfelt thanks also go to the Police and SCDF officers and officers from the Gurkha Contingent at the scene to manage the situation. I wish the injured officers a full and speedy recovery.

It’s unfortunate but the riot in Little India happened. It is an isolated and unexpected serious incident but the situation is fully under Police control now and we should continue our lives normally.
Please show support for frontline officers eg Police, Civil Defence, NEA, etc.
In a situation like this we should stop (and help to stop) the spreading rumours, esp. avoid anything with racial undertones to maintain our racial and religious harmony. We should speak out against riot as a matter of principle but shd not stoke anti-foreigners sentiments. Look out for government updates in newspapers/MediaCorp and circulate the info to our community. Do not spread online news without checking out the facts.
The govt will deal with the culprits of riot decisively according to the full weight of the law to ensure that Singapore will continue to be a safe place for the people.

The riot in Little India is a serious but isolated incident. The authorities have restored calm and order to the area, and are continuing with their investigations. We should support our frontline officers from the Home Team. Singaporeans should stay calm, demonstrate resilience, and continue their daily lives normally
This incident is the result of unlawful actions of some individuals. We will not tolerate such lawless behaviour. The Government will deal with the culprits of the riot decisively, according to the full weight of the law
Foreign workers in Singapore are, by and large, law-abiding individuals who are here to earn a living and support their families in their home countries. We should not tar all foreign workers with the same brush
As a community, it is important that we avoid spreading rumours or misinformation about the incident, and keep xenophobia and racial remarks out of the conversation. Check the facts first before sharing any online information.
All of us have a role to play in maintaining peace and harmony in Singapore.

My generation is completely unused to such things, so its important that we react calmly and thoughtfully when we post comments online on this episode or speak in daily conversation on matters concerning race in particular. Referring to Bangladeshi workers (or any foreign workers of an ethnic group) as “ah neh” etc., is not helpful and show how far we have to go in building an inclusive society. Full support to our Police and SCDF personnel in responding to this incident and I hope none of them have been injured.
