Push-ups replace pull-ups in NAPFA test for pre-national service students

SINGAPORE — From January next year, push-ups will replace pull-ups as a test station in the National Physical Fitness Award (NAPFA) test conducted for male students from pre-university institutions, polytechnics and Institute of Technical Education (ITE).
The change is intended to facilitate the use of NAPFA test results for pre-enlistment purposes, in line with changes made to the Individual Physical Proficiency Test (IPPT) earlier this year, where the number of IPPT test stations had been revised from five to three, with the notable addition of push-ups as a test station.
Currently, the NAPFA test comprises six test items to assess the overall fitness of students, customised for different age groups. The current test items for post-secondary students are sit-ups, pull-ups (for males)/inclined pull-up (for females), sit-and-reach, standing broad jump, shuttle run and the 2.4km run/walk.
There will be no changes to the NAPFA test items for all students at the primary and secondary levels, and for female students in pre-university institutions, polytechnics and ITE.
