Quicker, easier online job hunt with Google's new search experience in S'pore

SINGAPORE — Tech giant Google on Thursday (Aug 2) unveiled a new search experience which makes it easier for job seekers in Singapore to find employment opportunities from popular job listing websites, online classifieds, and companies.

SINGAPORE — Tech giant Google on Thursday (Aug 2) unveiled a new search experience which makes it easier for job seekers in Singapore to find employment opportunities from popular job listing websites, online classifieds, and companies.

Users who type in their job search terms into the search bar will now be able to see a consolidated list of job openings from hundreds of thousands of jobs posted on over 1,500 sites, including job portals such as MyCareersFuture.sg, FastJobs, JobsCentral and LinkedIn.

Using keywords such as "part-time jobs", "internships", and "admin jobs" – or similar unique job seeking queries – will trigger a special module to pop up in the search results. By clicking on the listing, users will be able to see information such as job title and location, as well as important details such as reviews and ratings of the employers by trusted sources.

They will also be able to visit the job listing page directly to find out more about the opening, or submit their application online.

This will make job hunting easier and quicker for users, as they will not have to go through the hassle of visiting multiple websites to search for jobs.

This is the first time that the feature, which was first introduced in United States in June last year, is being rolled out in South-east Asia. It is currently also available in other countries such as the United Kingdom and India.

Available on both mobile and desktop, the job search feature is equipped with a number of tools to make it easier for job seekers to find opportunities that fit their requirements.

The available jobs can be filtered according to categories such as location, company type, employer, and date posted. The job listings can also be saved and shared with friends and colleagues, and users can sign up for alerts to receive notifications when relevant new openings come up.

Ms Joy Xi, product manager of Google Search said there was "clear" demand from Singaporeans when it came to job hunting online. "Job seekers in Singapore already turn to Google Search when they're looking for a job, and in the past year we've seen 14 per cent growth in mobile searches for job and career queries compared to the previous year," she said.

"In fact, many of these searches are happening on the go. Over the last year, almost fifty per cent of job-related queries in Singapore were made on mobile devices. We're hoping that the new immersive job search experience, in particular the mobile-friendly interface we built for, will make it easier for Singaporeans to find jobs more quickly and efficiently."

According to Google, the top job searches online over the last 12 months were for part-time, freelance, and driver jobs. Opportunities in admin, social services, and insurance were also trending searches.

Aside from users, businesses and job providers will also benefit from the new feature, as Google has released open documentation which will allow them to publish their job openings on the new search experience and make their listings "more discoverable, creating a win-win situation for both job-seekers and employers", added Ms Xi.

Ms Lynn Ng, Group Director, Careers Connect Group of Workforce Singapore (WSG), noted that Google's job search will "tap on the more than 23,000 job postings across 23 industries on MyCareersFuture.sg".

"Such private sector driven initiatives complements WSG's efforts to disseminate information on job vacancies to more jobseekers to help them in their job search," she added.

Mr Sam Ng, Managing Director of Jobs Central, added: "We are excited for a powerful collaboration with Google that will bring more visibility to our clients' job listings and help job seekers find these opportunities faster."
