SINGAPORE — Raffles Institution will suspend school for a day after one of its students tested positive for Covid-19 on Thursday (Feb 27).

The Year 1 student, whom the Ministry of Health refers to as Case 96, has a family member, Case 94, who tested positive with the disease on Wednesday.

The Ministry of Education (MOE) said in a press release that the student fell ill on Feb 21. He has been on medical leave and not been in school since.

Before that, he had attended a language class at the MOE Language Centre in Bishan on Feb 20.

In light of the development, RI will be stepping up precautionary measures to protect its students and staff members to prevent the spread of Covid-19, MOE said.

These measures include:

  • Suspension of school for Year 1 to 6 on Friday to conduct a thorough cleaning and disinfecting of the school premises. School will resume on Monday.

  • A 14-day leave of absence will be imposed on students, teachers and staff members who had recently come into contact with the student.

  • Suspension of co-curricular activities for Year 1 to 6 in RI for two weeks.

MOE said that these are in addition to precautionary measures that the ministry had implemented for all schools, such as suspension of large group and communal activities that include assemblies, as well as staggering of recess times.

Separately, the MOE Language Centre in Bishan will also suspend classes on Friday to clean and disinfect its premises.

Students, teachers and staff members of the centre who were in close contact with the student will be issued a 14-day leave of absence.

MOE said that it will continue to monitor the situation closely and work with students, parents and the community of the two institutions.

It also urges all students and staff members to continue practising good personal hygiene.

This includes washing their hands frequently with soap, wearing a surgical mask if they have a cough or runny nose, and seeing a doctor if they are sick and returning to school only when fully recovered.
