Covid-19: Record high of 1,426 new infections in Singapore, S11 dorm cluster grows to almost 2,000 cases

SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) on Monday (April 20) announced 1,426 new cases of Covid-19, bringing the total number of infections here to 8,014.

SINGAPORE — The Ministry of Health (MOH) on Monday (April 20) announced 1,426 new cases of Covid-19, bringing the total number of infections here to 8,014.

There were no imported cases.

Of the 25 cases in the community, 18 are Singaporeans or Permanent Residents while seven are work pass holders.

MOH said that the number of new cases in the community has decreased, from an average of 39 cases per day in the week before, to an average of 29 per day in the past week.

The number of unlinked cases in the community has remained relatively constant, with an average of 20 cases per day for the past two weeks.

“We will continue to closely monitor these numbers, as well as the cases detected through our surveillance programme,” the health ministry said.

The MOH also highlighted the formation of three new clusters of infections: Jurong Apartments (555 Upper Jurong Road), Woodlands Lodge II (190 Woodlands Industrial Park E7) and 8 Sungei Kadut Loop.

The health ministry said that there were 32 new cases of Covid-19 among work permit holders who are residing outside the dormitories.

A further 1,369 cases are those who are residing in the dormitories.

“The main increase today continues to be for work permit holders residing in dormitories, where we are picking up many more cases because of extensive testing. These are not new infections as the workers are staying in their rooms and many have not reported sick. But when the teams go in to test them, many turn out to be positive,” said MOH.

It added: “Most of these cases have a mild illness and are being monitored in the community isolation facilities or general ward of our hospitals. None of them is in the intensive care unit.”

The S11 Dormitory cluster in Punggol has since grown to 1,977 confirmed cases as of Monday.

UPDATE ON THE CONFIRMED CASES

In all, MOH said that 801 patients have fully recovered from the Covid-19 infection and have been discharged from hospitals or community isolation facilities, including the 33 discharged on Monday.

Of the 3,420 confirmed cases who are still in hospital, most are in stable condition or improving.

Twenty-three are in critical condition under intensive care.

MOH said that 3,782 cases who are clinically well but still test positive for Covid-19 are isolated and cared for at community facilities.

Eleven people have died from complications due to Covid-19 infection.
