SINGAPORE — One resident was killed and three others rescued from a next door unit after a fire broke out in a flat at Jurong East on Tuesday (Aug 16) morning.

The Singapore Civil Defence Force (SCDF) said in a Facebook post that it was alerted to the fire at Block 236 Jurong East Street 21 at around 2.50am on Tuesday and arrived to a fire raging inside a unit on the ninth floor.

A resident in the affected unit had self-evacuated before SCDF’s arrival.

SCDF firefighters wore breathing apparatus sets and entered the heavily smoke-filled residence to conduct firefighting operations. A combined platform ladder was also deployed at the rear of the block for external firefighting.

At the same time, firefighters forced their way into the flat next door to rescue the three occupants inside.

The fire was put out using three water jets, and the affected unit was entirely damaged by heat and smoke, said SCDF.

A body was found in the unit and pronounced dead by a paramedic, it added.

“Damping down operations are currently ongoing,” said SCDF, referring to the application of water to wet burnt surfaces immediately after a fire is put out to prevent any potential rekindling of fire from the hot burnt surfaces.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
