SINGAPORE — People in Singapore can look forward to six long public holiday weekends next year, including a four-day long break for Chinese New Year in January.

Based on a list of gazetted public holidays released by the Ministry of Manpower on Friday (April 8), seven of the public holidays in 2023 will fall on a Monday, Friday, or Sunday.

Three public holidays will fall on a Monday, one on a Friday and three on a Sunday.

As the Chinese New Year holiday will fall on Jan 22 and 23 — Sunday and Monday — there will be a single four-day long weekend from Jan 21 to 24.

The ministry said that employees who are required to work on a public holiday are entitled to an extra day’s salary at the basic rate of pay, in addition to their gross rate of pay for that day.

Employers and employees may mutually agree to substitute a public holiday for another working day.

Employers also have the option of granting time-off-in-lieu, based on a mutually agreed number of hours, for working on a public holiday for the following group of employees:

  • Workmen earning more than S$4,500 a month
  • Non-workmen earning more than S$2,600 a month
  • All managers and executives
