SINGAPORE — SMRT aims to lift 40kmh speed restrictions for trains moving over tracks with new concrete sleepers about two months after they have been imposed to ensure safety of commuters.

Speaking to reporters during sleeper replacement works early today (Nov 29), SMRT said that such measures are necessary until the track is certified safe for normal use.

TODAY understands that in between MRT stations, trains usually travel up to 80kmh in between MRT stations and slows down to 60kmh when moving through curves.

Under SMRT’S sleeper replacement programme, about 188,000 sleepers on open-air tracks for the North-South and East-West Lines are currently being replaced with concrete sleepers by 2016. As of yesterday, about two per cent of timber sleepers have already being replaced by concrete ones, according to SMRT.

Concrete sleepers will enable smoother rides for commuters, said SMRT. In addition, they have a longer lifespan of 50 years compared to timber sleepers which have to be replaced every 15 to 25 years.
