The Singapore Children’s Society’s (SCS) annual fundraiser, Walk for Our Children, has raised about S$310,000 in support of programmes for the society’s beneficiaries, who include vulnerable children, low-income families and loved ones of the incarcerated, among others.
One such beneficiary is Madam Yusfiati’s family. The 39-year-old office cleaner and her husband, a cleaner at a condominium, are raising two boys, 11 and 13, on a monthly household income of S$1,800.
Her younger son, Zaidan, attends an after-school programme at the SCS’ student service hub at Henderson, which supports 45 primary school children from low-income, single-parent or distressed families who are sometimes left at home without adult supervision. They were among the 67,577 people who benefitted from SCS programmes last year.
“The programme is (a) big help. If not (for it), it’ll be difficult for my husband and I to work in the day ... I need not worry that my sons might (mix with) bad friends ... I’m so scared when (there’s) nobody at home,” Mdm Yusfiati said.
Her elder son, Mohamad Hafis, who graduated from the same programme last year, said the counsellors and volunteers helped him learn to “be a better person” by conveying important values. The programme also helped him focus on his studies.
More than 3,000 participants walked 3.5km around Marina Bay yesterday. Many were glued to their phones throughout the walk, as organisers had unleashed Pokemon Go “lures”, to attract Pokemon monsters, and at least 20 Pokestops along the route. Photo: Wee Teck Hian
