SINGAPORE — Special Operations Command (SOC) police officers forced their way into an Ang Mo Kio flat on Tuesday (March 22) to arrest two men accused of criminal intimidation and suspected drug offences. They had locked themselves in the flat with their elderly mother in a five-hour stand-off with the authorities.

In response to queries from TODAY, the police said that they had responded to a call for help at Block 508 Ang Mo Kio Avenue 8, after two men refused to cooperate with Central Narcotics Bureau (CNB) officers during an enforcement operation.

The two men, aged 53 and 52, had allegedly locked themselves in a flat together with their 77-year-old mother.

Officers from SOC, the Crisis Negotiation Unit and Singapore Civil Defence Force were deployed to the scene, after it was assessed that the men “might pose a danger to themselves and their mother”, the police said.

SOC officers made a forced entry into the unit and arrested the two men at 11.55am for alleged criminal intimidation and suspected drug-related offences.

Investigations by the police and CNB are ongoing.

In a separate statement, CNB said: "Both men have been arrested for suspected drug-related offences, including drug consumption, drug possession, possession of drug-taking utensils and failing to report for urine tests. Investigations into the drug activities of both men are ongoing."

Ms Nadia Samdin, Member of Parliament for Ang Mo Kio Group Representation Constituency, wrote on Facebook that her team is working with community stakeholders and organisations to try to help the family “through this difficult situation”.

“I am grateful for the concern shown by residents and Singaporeans alike,” she added.

Criminal intimidation carries a punishment of up to two years or a fine, or both.

If found guilty of aggravated criminal intimidation, or intimidation with threat to cause death or grievous hurt or to destroy property with fire, a person can be jailed up to 10 years or fined, or both.
