SINGAPORE — The night-time thunderstorms and downpours seen in the past two weeks is set to be replaced by warm and dry weather for the rest of the month, the weatherman’s latest forecast indicates.

Over the next two weeks, daily temperatures are expected to range between 25°C and 34°C, reaching the maximum of 34°C on most days, the Meteorological Service of Singapore (MSS) said in a statement on Friday (Oct 16).

The daily maximum temperature could reach close to 35°C for a few days, particularly when there are few clouds. This is unlike the first two weeks of October, when maximum temperatures were under 34°C on all days, except on Oct 5.

With the monsoon rain band expected to lie over the northern Southeast Asia region, rainfall will likely be below-normal over most parts of Singapore for the rest of the month.

However, moderate to heavy thundery showers can still be expected over some parts of the island for a short duration between the late morning and afternoon.

The prevailing south-west monsoon conditions with low-level winds blowing from the south-east or south-west are expected to persist in the second half of the month. Winds could also blow from the west side of Singapore.

This means the Sumatra squalls — a line of thunderstorms that originate over Sumatra or the Strait of Malacca — could also bring some thundery showers and gusty winds between the pre-dawn hours and mornings on some days, the MSS said.

So far this month, the showers were heaviest on Oct 2, when the highest rainfall in a single day in the first two weeks was recorded.

The thunderstorms at night were due to the influence of tropical storms over the South China Sea and the north-western Pacific Ocean, which led to a “large-scale wind convergence” over Singapore, the MSS said.

There was also above-average rainfall over the western part of Singapore in the first two weeks of the month, but rainfall was below-average for the rest of Singapore.

The hottest temperature in October so far was 34.8°C at Pulau Ubin on Oct 5, and the chilliest day in the fortnight was Oct 3, when temperatures reached just 22.6°C in Clementi.
