SINGAPORE — Eco-friendly "tiny houses" on Singapore's southern Lazarus Island will be open for online booking in mid-April for people who want to stay overnight there.

In response to TODAY's queries, Mr Jeff Yeo, the co-founder of Big Tiny, said that the houses will come with a queen-sized bed, a sofa bed, a fully equipped kitchen, air-conditioning and hot-water shower.

The overnight rates will be announced closer to the April launch.

It was announced in Parliament on Tuesday (Feb 28) that five of these cabins will be made available on the island.

They are each between 150 and 170 sqf in size.

Mr Yeo said that the five houses are already being set up on the island. They will have different themes that "brings to life the different significant milestones in Singapore's history".

"We aim to pay tribute and bring our guests on that historical journey all the way from the 1900s to present day Singapore."

He added that one of the houses is the first one that the company had brought into Singapore when Big Tiny started.

"Guests to our Tiny Away Escape@Lazarus Island can look forward to the very same quality of the experiential getaway that we have been providing overseas for the past five years."

The company also has tiny houses in countries such as Australia, Malaysia and New Zealand.

Mr Yeo also said that he is proud to have the chance to bring the accommodation service back to Singapore, where the business first began.

On the reception that he expects the houses will receive, he said: "We are definitely expecting a big reception as we already have people writing in to us to express interest in booking our tiny houses."

He added that the company is always on the lookout for the "perfect spots" to place the tiny houses so that guests may discover nature but not have to sacrifice the usual "creature comforts that we are so accustomed to".

Should the current Lazarus Island launch be a success, the company may plan to expand to other islands in Singapore such as Coney Island.
