SINGAPORE — A new toolkit, with content tailored to the different stages of parenting, was launched today (July 6). Called the Essential Parenting Resource Kit, it gives parents tips to get them through their child’s foundation, discovery, and teenage years.

The toolkit was developed under FamilyMatters!, an initiative between the government and community partners to nurture a pro-family mindset and aims to equip Singaporeans with the skills and knowledge to enhance the quality of their family life.

FamilyMatters! now offers more than 1,000 programmes about various topics including family life — a more than 10 per cent jump from when the initiative was first launched in April this year. There has also been an increase in the number of service providers coming on board — from 34 to 40.

The Ministry of Social and Family Development has set aside S$40 million to fund the initiative over three years, and plans to double the outreach from close to one million last year to two million Singaporeans in 2015.

The Essential Parenting Resource Kit was launched at the Singapore Parenting Congress by Acting Minister of Social and Family Development Chan Chun Sing.

Mr Chan said: “On the part of the government, we’d also like to partner as many organisations as possible to reach out to as many parents as possible to share those tips to enable all of us to be better parents along the way.

“We continue to believe that the family must be the cornerstone of a successful Singapore. Without the family as the nucleus, as a nuclear unit in our society, then no matter how successful we are economically, it has no meaning. Because no matter how successful we are economically, at the end of the day, it boils down to going back to a family.

“And this is why as we continue to go forth to develop economically in all other spheres, we must never, never forget that the family remains as the core of our society.”

The Singapore Parenting Congress is an annual event organised by MediaCorp and is supported by the Ministry of Social and Family Development. It provides a platform for parents as well as international and local parenting experts to come together and share tips and insights. CHANNEL NEWSASIA
