SINGAPORE - The Traffic Police has begun installing digital traffic cameras around Singapore since March 1 this year.

A total of 240 such cameras will be installed by next June and to date, half of them have been installed, said the Traffic Police today (Nov 10).

The remaining 120 cameras still rely on film photography. Compared to film, the new digital cameras can produce pictures of higher resolution, according to the Traffic Police. The new cameras will also be operational around the clock, compared to the film cameras which can run out of film occassionally.

In a brief to reporters this morning, the Traffic Police said a total of 39 lives were lost over the past 4 years as a result of traffic vehicles beating the red light.

Last year, about 5.3 per cent of the 150 fatal accidents on the roads involved vehicles beating the red light.
