SINGAPORE — In a video that has gone viral on TikTok, a Singaporean couple on their honeymoon in Bali, Indonesia describes waking on their second day in a villa on the resort island to find that they had been burgled.

The video, posted by a TikTok user named "Fatin" on Tuesday (Oct 4), shows a spacious two-storey villa located in the Canggu area.

Closed-circuit television footage showed "a ladyboy climbing in at 5am", Fatin writes in the video, referring to a colloquial term used to describe a transgender woman or effeminate man.

Her husband, Fadhil, then re-enacts the break-in, demonstrating how the burglar had used built-in ledges as footholds to scale the outer wall of the compound.

The re-enactment ends with Fadhil dropping down onto an outdoor sofa bed, conveniently placed right at the point of entry.

Viewers quickly drew attention to this point, with the top comment joking: Wah still got soft landing pad for the burglar 😂😂😂".

This led to speculation that the burglary had been "planned by the villa crew" as the burglar seemed to be extremely familiar with the layout of the villa, knowing how and where to climb in.

Some netizens also began to share similar stories of Bali villa burglaries, criticising how "unsafe" such villas are.

Thankfully, Fatin and Fadhil had a happy ending to their "Bali-moon nightmare".

In a follow-up video, Fatin confirms that the following items were taken from the first floor, which comprises the living room and bathroom:

  • Fatin's Apple watch
  • Toiletries, including Fatin's make-up products
  • Slippers
  • The villa's own JBL Bluetooth speakers

They were "lucky", she says, that no important items were stolen. She was also glad that the culprit did not venture up to the second floor, where the couple had been sound asleep.

They discovered that their belongings had been stolen only on the morning of the second day, when they went to the bathroom to take a shower.

After informing the villa staff, reviewing the CCTV footage and lodging a police report, the couple decided to continue with their stay.

The saga ended on a positive note. Fatin writes: "On our last day, the manager told us the police caught the culprit and managed to retrieve our belongings!"

The police also granted the couple "permission to see the culprit and even take pictures", resulting in a mugshot-style photo that amused viewers no end.

@fatinsealsthedhil We were lucky because only my apple watch, some toiletries & slippers were stolen. Thankfully the culprit did not go up to second floor while we were sleeping. Villa compensated us by waiving the cost of our stay. & even provided free meals & transportation to the airport. Also thankful for the police in Bali for working swiftly to get our stuff back. Despite the incident, we enjoyed Bali very much! #balitok #tiktoksg #canggu ♬ Epic Music(842228) - Pavel

Unfortunately, though Fatin is seen in the video happily reunited with her Apple watch and make-up, the couple was not permitted to bring their belongings back to Singapore as the items were to be used as "evidence".

"The Balinese police said if we took (them) back then the culprit would be let off," she explained.

"We were then told to come back to Bali in about three months after investigation to collect our stuff."

Netizens claimed it was "rare" for the police to nab the culprit in such cases, especially to have done so with such speed. This sparked further speculation over a possible "inside job".

But Fatin dismissed their theories by pointing out that the villa management stood to lose had the culprit not been caught as they had compensated the couple for their stolen items. They had also reimbursed the cost of their accommodation, meals and airport transfers.

"Despite the incident, we enjoyed Bali very much!" Fatin added. "Bali is amazing. Just keep your valuables with you at ALL times."
